All of the original martial arts were literally just that intended for war fighting on a battlefield with weapons starting with long-range like arrows and catapults (trebuchet) and when that was exhausted, going to spears held and thrown then swords then knives having to get face to face. In modern war its bombs, artillery, missiles, sniping, mortars, then RPGs, rifles, bayonets, pistols, knives, hands.

All sanctioned events are unrealistic. In real life, people are attacked by groups or somebody who is much larger if they intend to do you harm and they aren't just being stupid. In fact, If someone truly intends wants to harm or kill you, they will come at you from behind when you least expect it. They will never confront you face to face if they can avoid it. They will spend weeks figuring out your schedule and when you are most vulnerable. So don't get on somebody's bad nor gamble nor sleep with other men's wives and any other stuff that will make you a target.

The US high school wrestling rule book has rules that enable blind kids to wrestle. #1 is they can never break contact. If contact is broken, they must restart in contact from neutral, top, or bottom.

As far as I can tell, self defence is a legal term. In other words, you have to address when something doesn't work (i.e., techniques) and when something does work (i.e., the legal ramifictions: were you justified in doing what you did?). So really, self defence is about taking martial skills that we know works and putting them in the context of self defence. But why would anyone rely on something they've NEVER pressure tested as a formation for self defence, in a context that has NO RULES? I don't get it. Combat sports athletes are very intelligent. They'll definitely find a way to poke someone in the eye or groin kick someone. Hell, Mike Tyson didn't need to train in order to bite Holyfield's ear off. "Learn what works against trained killers", and put it into context.

MMA does not make you a superhero, they have many shortcomings for a situation of those experienced in security jobs, combat with firearms, knives, it is clear that being an MMA practitioner will help you, to begin with you will be in good physical condition and mentally, you will know how to fight, but the reality is different from what is in a ring, many martial arts focused on CQC prepare you for specific situations that MMA does not prepare you for. A person who is expert in the handling of bladed weapons will surely destroy an MMA fighter if he has a knife at hand, or a good revolver shooter will kill an MMA fighter easily. As a security worker (escort) you have to know how to handle all kinds of combat and prepare for all kinds of situations and if you practice MMA, and do weights well, but knowledge of CQC is essential.

Would you dare to confront someone with a weapon? Are you willing to carry a weapon?! Be careful with bullshit self-defense MA. Look for a discipline that is more practical than theoric, sth that you can train and test on a daily basis AGAINST FULL RESISTANCE. That's the most important thing if you wanna learn to fight. And watch by yourself which high percentage finishing techniques MMA fighters use: from kickboxing, wrestling, bjj...

Training in MMA give you a great foundation. It give you confidence in yourself. Then just know the ring and street are different. The type of attack is going to be different. A mugger on the street is going to put you in a situation where you are at a disadvantage.

Most of us have had moments when we felt something was 'wrong' in a situation, the 'energy was bad' etc. and that we shouldn't linger or go in that direction or whatever. I would argue that is threat awareness keeping us from even getting entangled in a risky situation in the first place.

Learning martial arts that only work on untrained attackers is just as valid as learning martial arts to fight trained opponents. Martial arts are tools, we are the users. Self defence is hugely important, so is training how to fight highly trained fighters, so is not fighting at all. People are way to quick to jump the gun and insult self defence styles, and to slate them and shit all over them. "We are all martial artists", dick measuring and saying "your style is crap" "your style won't work" etc is just pathetic and achieves nothing. There are real frauds out there and real fake martial arts that we should be attacking, not the valid arts no matter the category

As for pressure points I guarantee the Bell-End Bonanza (Speed Ball Busting) works! Drop to knees and do circling hand punches like hitting a speed ball on his groin area. Nobody can take that! 1) Drop to knees fast. 2) Punch hard and fast - multiple strikes. 3) Be ready to guard if they try knee you.

Rogan's criticism can be levelled at krav maga which his buddy Bas Rutten seems to champion. Self-defense isn't about becoming a superior fighter but about paying more attention to one's surroundings, threat recognition, avoidance, keeping one's ego in check, verbal dissuasion, knowledge of criminal psychology, the criminal law and acquiring a simple set of physical skills. With those skills the chance of ever having to fight in the first place are slim to none. Only as a last resort is violence employed which also happens to be a legal requirement (if you seemed eager to participate in a non-sanctioned fight you'll be in trouble with the law). You'll also know what to say to the police and a judge to avoid a conviction for assault and battery. If the chance of being assaulted by a trained fighter is high the answer is not to play their own game but to carry a weapon to negate their advantage and trump it. Rogan's hard-on for 'trained killers' completely disregards the fact that unarmed skills become virtually useless in a weapons environment and real violence (the sort that can get you killed or seriously hurt) is best met with mechanical implements not body weapons. Anyone with a gun is a potential killer and it's much more efficient than kicking, punching or grappling. Unless UFC fighters have acquired the magical skill of being faster than a bullet it's clear Rogan's claims of 'deadliness' of unarmed arts is greatly exaggerated and amounts to a similar level of mysticism he reproaches others for. In war (the most deadly pursuit known to man) no-one fights unarmed unless as an absolute hail Mary act of desperation. You also don't fight one on one if you can avoid it. What is pretty much guaranteed to work on 'trained killers' is hot lead. It's much more efficient than kickboxing, MMA, BJJ and the like. No matter the ego-gratification of guys like Rogan who think they're a superior breed because they lift weights and train certain arts. Then again what can one expect from someone who works for the UFC? The more people train in combat sports the more interest for their competition and the more income. Simple economics. I don't depreciate those arts but to exaggerate their importance or usefulness outside of their intended purpose amounts to deceiving the public as much as clowns who have no real fighting skills claiming to teach self-defense. Of course he has a point that certain techniques and types of training are fairly useless but to deny the specific advantages of good self-protection training based on a complete lack of knowledge of the field is fairly stupid. Look up Lee Morrison of Urban Combatives and tell me a) this man doesn't know how to fight and b) what he offers isn't much more useful than skill in beating someone in a very specific format. The chance of having to face a kickboxer are very low so why train that as a first line of self-defense when there are much better options available? Self-protection is about much, much more than being able to hit someone hard or choke them out and trainers in combat sports are usually not knowledgeable in that area. To me Rogan's opinion on this amounts to bias and ignorance coupled with a straw man argument. Why is he seen as a expert on the very broad field of physical violence? His main expertise seems to lie in doing drugs and sounding deep because he has read something on the internet or heaven forbid has read a book or two.

I am by no means a martial artist but I had a fairly solid boxing experience in my early teens to my early 20s. when I was about 26 I hadn't trained for years but wasn't exactly unfit I was coming home from a night out. I was walking along eating a takeaway pizza not a care in the world when I was jumped from behind by 3 kids. One took out my legs, I went down hard and the other kid pulled out a knife. They took my wallet and phone and gave me a few punches before running off. The whole thing probably took about a minute. It fucked me up I kept thinking about what I should have done or if I'd just been paying more attention.

Self-Defence. It's a concept martial arts school owners try to sell on the public. A naive idea the average joe is going to be able to react under pressure and not freeze. Forget all theve learned. Add they've likely never been hit or know what it's like to hit another person. Also, in real life we don't know how many attackers there are and who they are. Self-Defence gives people a false sense of security. Same for "firearms home defence tactic courses". Disagree with Rogan about training to fight another skilled person. . The chances of anyone running into an attacker who has a black belt in BJJ is so remote. ;) What one SHOULD do is train in a full-contact combat art---western boxing, roman greco wrestling...which should give one the best chance of surviving...and take the least amount of damage...

In my honest opinion...threat awareness comes from being around threats, all the time. I have no MA training and learned the hard way, so I have my boys in BJJ, Muay Thai, etc so they can hopefully take care of themselves. That said, that training, even after 3ish years (they are 10 and 12), has not taught them threat awareness at all. I think you need a new podcast to discus this with people who KNOW...and grew up like me in a BAD place. All that said..thank you sir.
